masquerade!

the masquerade got me excited. i browsed shops for masks, only to realize that they are bloody expensive (well, nice ones are). so instead, i opted to make my own. i bought some basic masks for john and i (black for him, gold for me) and got crafty. the job was a bit tedious, very meticulous and somehow, incredibly satisfying. i sat at the kitchen table and glued sparkles and feathers and adorned our masks to masquerade-worthy levels.

we arrived at the ball adorned in our mask and wearing our smashing outfits. upon walking in, i realized that john goes to uni with some very young people, who were incredibly apprehensive about donning their masks. probably in case one of them judged another. i for one, didn't care and strode through the crowd, shimmering in green and gold with a mask to match. the rest of the crowd slowly adopted their masks and by the middle of the night, a fair few were hiding behind one.
not surprising fact: masks are hot! and not in an attractive way but in a sweaty way. john and i managed to keep ours on the entire night, but most didn't survive. my friend gen, in her cleverness, painted a mask onto her face so she didn't have to deal with it. not a bad idea.
the ball itself was fun. the meals were tasty, the speeches were mostly short and the champagne was flowing freely. the dj lacked actual dj skills but is that really surprising? our cue to get off the dance floor and head home was when "i'm a barbie girl" came on, followed by "land down under". i'm pretty sure i could've played better music by plugging in my ipod!
i do have pictures from the evening, but our camera is currently in india with john and i forgot to upload pics before he left. i've posted the fruits of my labour, just so you can see them. but when i get the camera back, i'll add a few good ones from the ball!
