FOFF
the fremantle outdoor film festival (FOFF) is an annual event occurring in feb. each year, a small park space/courtyard in freo gets fenced in, a movie screen is erected and a few rows of lazy chairs get placed in a neat order. you can bring all the snacks you want but no BYO. and you can rent a blanket (or rug, as they say here) for a gold coin donation if it gets a bit chilly.
the festival is a nice offering. the movies show 5 nights a week and each night is different. some days you'll get documentaries (or docos, as they say), other days music-based movies/docos and still other days you'll find foreign films. almost all of the movies start with a 2-10 minute short movie. i don't always get the short-films. they seem weird, but who am i to judge (the target audience, i suppose!)
in the past, the festival had a bit more oomph. they had entertainment prior to the film, and food and beverage relating to the movie theme available. for example, when we saw a mexican film, there was a spanish band playing and tacos, guac and delicious margaritas available. sadly, it was not the case this year. instead i had to sit through some poorly chosen music (metal at a french comedy? i don't think so) being blasted through a sketchy sound system. i was irritated but luckily the movie was hilarious (welcome to the sticks. i recommend it)
still, the event is a fun one. like many "little big cities", not much happens in perth. so when something like this comes around, you have to take advantage of it. i managed to see a few interesting movies this year. i'm just hoping for my margarita next year!
