advanced australian-ese

having just written my last post, i realized how much aussie lingo/slang has infiltrated my vocabulary. it's also obvious to me when i call home and i'm asked what i mean when i say something. so here we go with another lesson:

rug = blanket

to rug up = to get dressed warmly

doona = blanket. perhaps more specifically, duvet

shout (at bar) = round (ex. it's your shout)

tea= eating (morning tea, afternoon tea, and just tea. all different meals of the day)

corker= excellent (ex. that's a corker of a throw)

crook = sick (ex. i feel crook)

fair dinkum = true, genuine (ex. i'm a fair dinkum canadian)

feral= wild or terrible depending on context (ex. feral cat = wild cat, feral shirt= ugly top)

hey = eh? (aussies laugh at us for using "eh", but they use "hey" the exact same way)

stubby holder = beer cozy

pash= to kiss or makeout

root= uhm, to "get it on" (the "take me out to the ball game" song takes on new meaning)

snag= sausage (ex. throw some snags on the barbie)

togs= bathing suits

to pike= to bail/ ditch someone

ocker= hard-core aussie bogan/ true-blue aussie

punter= person attending a concert/festival

grand final= finals (they don't use semi-finals, so they'll say final, then grand final)

squiz= to have a look at

it's just not cricket = it's not normal

mad as a cut snake = crazy/ acting ridiculous

chuck a sickie = take a sick day when you're not sick

there are still more, but i keep forgetting. from now on i will be writing them down and when i've got enough, i'll add another lesson.
