outdoor cinema

i think that one of my favourite things about WA is the outdoor cinema. in a country where it's hot for 8 months of the year, with minimal rainy days during said 8 months, it's a concept that works exceptionally well. and what with coming from canada, an outdoor cinema is somewhat novel.
there are approximately 5 outdoor cinemas in greater perth area, which are freestanding and there all year long (though open from oct to may only). there are a number of smaller venues that crop up during the hotter months of summer or for festivals (like the fremantle outdoor film festival, for example). l
ucky for us, a fab outdoor venue sits about 10 mins away from here.
the outdoor cinemas here are similar to going to drive ins, only there are no cars. instead there are beach style chairs set up (or bean bags at some venues), usually with a bit of grass land to bring a blanket and lie down on. more often then not, they are licensed venues with a small bar at the back and munchies available (uhm, yeah, i'll have some chips, a diet coke and a small bottle of champagne please). the one closest to us, the camelot, also has a pizza oven. mmmm.

and of course, they play recent films. (well, recent to australia. probably 6 months behind canada) and most will play anything from big blockbusters to independent to foreign to cartoons. the only downside is that they start a bit late, because it's sunny here until almost 9pm during the summer (whilst we trial the daylight savings anyhow. who knows what next year will hold for us)
but really, being outdoors in the nice breeze, enjoying a good movie, having a snack, and drinking some wine (well, not me persay, but it's the image), is there a nicer way to spend a night?
